DIAMOND CUT SERIES

Explore the Series

Open to the Unexpected

This series was originally conceived as a metaphor for self exploration. The concept creates an object or vessel which represents “self” and reveals, through the creative process, a way to explore and bring to light the“inner self”. Vessels in this series layer multiple colors, one over the next, then a diamond saw is used to cut away portions on the form. This process allows the viewer to see both the surface of the piece and the exposed inner layers simultaneously, the way a cut tree reveals rings of growth.

As with each individual “self”, this series has continued to grow and evolve since it’s inception. The essence of the concept remains, and although the Diamond Cuts have grown in scale, the adornment has simplified. The objects are now about color and form, expressing joy and spontaneity. They are a culmination of the “inner self” and the “outer self” becoming more integrated and willing to be seen.

Process

The Diamond Cut Series is created from the culmination of many steps in a creative process. Colored layers of hot glass are stretched with heat and pressure over one another, up to six or seven layers in each design. Once cooled to room temperature, a design is cut into the form with a diamond saw. The form is then reheated to working temperature, picked up on a bubble of molten glass and blown into its final form.
